We believe the soil is alive and needs to be treated with care. The soil is important to us because we want to grow healthy nutritious food for our customers.

Currently, there are three main production components to the farm:

Poultry operation- We have chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys, Guinea, and peacocks. with the majority of our birds being egg producing hens. They are feed all organic grain and have the opportunity to forage for themselves.

Vegetable operation- Our garden is full of over 40 different types of annual and perennial vegetables. This portion of the farm is being expanded this year and should total about 2 1/4 acres in production.

Fruit orchard- attempting to be all organic. We have grapes, apples, Asian pears, peaches, pears, blueberries and brambles.

We sell Eggs year round. Our birds are fed Certified Organic feed, which cost four times the price of conventional feed. After doing some calculation, we found that in every dozen egg is $2 worth of feed. Our other cost (travel, insurance, packaging, and Market fees) make the cost of our egg seems significant when compared to the conventional market. At $6 a dozen we are still only paying ourselves less than minimum wage to bring them to market. But we love working with the birds and bring eggs to market so we preserver and could not do it with out customers who appreciate our farm fresh eggs.

We also sell vegetables and Fruit, which are giving just as much care as our eggs.

Stony Crest Urban Farms grows a full range of seasonal vegetables with a special focus on varieties that are particularly colorful, textually different or unique in flavor to provide interesting cooking and eating experiences for their customers. In the spring they offer vegetable transplants that are bred or well adapted to growing in containers or small spaces since most yards in Brookside and Waldo neighborhoods are compact. Their In Season Dog Treats provide our dog customers an opportunity to minimize their carbon footprint with treats made locally using in-season organic vegetables. They also grow cut flowers.

If you would like to visit their farm (8740 Brooklyn, Kansas City, MO 64132), please make reservations by calling Rodger (816-510-8132) or Diane (816-304-2517).

Those of you who like keeping up with your farmers via social media can find Stony Crest Urban Farm on Facebook.

Mission, vision, values, beliefs

We grow organic vegetables in the urban core of Kansas City to delight others with the endless beneficial qualities of fresh, locally grown food and to enhance the social fabric of our community. We support agricultural practices that encourage healthy soil, genetically diverse ecosystems, people, and communities. We are members of the Kansas City Food Circle and the Missouri Vegetable Growers Association (MVGA). Rodger is the Secretary of the MVGA.

Ami, Jim, Anna & Andrew Zumalt have been growing at Red Ridge Farms since 2009 and started coming to market the same year.

Red Ridge Farms will be planting and harvesting over 400 varieties of fruits and vegetables this year. Artichoke, arugula, beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, chard, cress, cucumber, eggplant, garlic, gourds, greens, kale, kohlrabi, leek, lettuce, melon, okra, parsnips, peas, peppers, Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, radish, spinach, squash, rutabaga, tomatoes, turnips, microgreens, cut flowers, strawberries, blackberries, pears, rhubarb, horseradish, asparagus, herbs, transplants, and random garden décor, supplies, fertilizers, and repellants.

They also offer CSA subscriptions (Community Supported Agriculture) – and offer a great percent off market prices with their debit style CSA program at Brookside. Buy what you want, when you want, at a discounted price.

They are eager to share their knowledge with volunteers and other community members, but, since they don’t live on their farm at 978 NW 1101 Road in Odessa, please call (816-6907161 or 816-694-4432) to make arrangements before hand. Those of you who like keeping up with your farmers via social media can keep in touch on Facebook

Mission, vision, values, beliefs

We believe that sustaining the earth sustains us. We believe that eating well requires fresh, local, and natural food. This is the best job we’ve ever had! We started this adventure because our children have various food allergies that make many ‘grocery store or restaurant dining’ choices off limits, and once we started reading about how interrelated health and good eating were, we had to jump in and make a difference.

New Roots builds on the strengths and experience that the refugees already possess. Farming is a familiar livelihood that offers them some measure of self-determination and self-sufficiency, healthy food for their families, extra income, and a context for settling into their new communities. Agriculture allows them to put down new roots, metaphorically and literally, and to become citizens who produce and give to their new communities. In the New Roots Program, participants start farming with significant training and support. As their farm businesses become established and they develop more skills, they will move to greater financial and managerial independence. Eventually they will be able to move onto their own piece of land and operate independently.

Each of the seventeen New Roots farmers sells different crops. For the 2012 season, in the spring, they will have brassicas and greens, onions, scallions, cabbages, and carrots if they’re lucky! In the warm season, they have peppers, eggplants, greens, lots of tomatoes, onions, garlic, squash, roots, etc.

New Roots farmers follow the guidelines of the National Organic Program, but are not certified due to literacy levels. Most of the New Roots farmers have only grown organically in their lives – using ancient productions methods that were passes down by their parents.

They love farm visits but please call (913-909-1027) or email newrootsforrefugees @ catholiccharitiesks.org a few days in advance. For those of you who like keeping in touch with your farmers via social media can find us on Twitter and Facebook.

The Gibbs Road Farm, a 2-acre urban farm in Kansas City, KS, serves as Cultivate Kansas City‘s model and demonstration farm for running a farm business in the city. The farm has been feeding Kansas City residents organic, urban grown food since 1997. They have been bringing their produce to the Brookside Farmers’ Market since its first year in 2003.

Gibbs Road Farm grows over 40 kinds of certified organic vegetables including over 250 heirloom and ethnic varieties of everything from greens to roots to tomatoes and more tomatoes along with a dozen or so culinary herbs. You can find them in the northwest corner of the Brookside Farmers Market every Saturday from April through October.

The farmers at 4223 Gibbs Road, Kansas City, KS 66106 welcome visitors. You are likely to have the best experience if you make an appointment by phone (913-831-2444), but Monday-Friday drop-ins are usually accommodated.

Mission, vision, values, beliefs

The farm’s mission is to grow food, farmers, community and the organic movement in Kansas City. The farm is a program of the non-profit organization Cultivate Kansas City which has the mission of being a catalyst for the production and consumption of locally grown food in Kansas City neighborhoods. The vision we share is one of creating a Kansas City where sustainable, community- engaged farms are providing an abundance of fresh and healthy food to city residents; people are earning an income through farming; unused spaces are turned to food producing farms and gardens; and appropriately scaled agriculture is understood and practiced as an integral part of a beautiful, lively, and healthy neighborhood.
